Loss Trends in 2025

One of the largest benefits we can provide the membership of NACA is passing along information about potential areas of concern within the collectibles industry. So, we wanted to highlight some trends we've seen in 2025 regarding claims to hopefully make you aware and help keep your shipments safe.

  • The most problematic area of the country for any shipping carrier is currently Texas, particularly the Dallas/Fort Worth areas. This is most likely because of a number of precious metal dealers based in those areas who accept a large volume of shipments daily. However, we have seen an increase in losses in these areas even with packages not going to/from those dealers. We have spoken with the security teams with some of the major carriers and they have confirmed that those areas are an ongoing problem for them. We do currently recommend avoiding sending packages to those areas if it is possible to do so.
  • We've also seen an uptick in the number of packages cut open with some or all of the contents removed. These thefts tend to primarily happen when smaller boxes are used, so we recommend using a medium size or larger box for all shipments (and include additional packaging materials so the contents don't rattle/move in the box).
  • The most common item we've had claims filed for is silver bullion in various forms. One of the main contributors to this is the weight of these packages. Our current recommendation is to keep any package under 40lbs in weight when possible. This is supported by the security teams at major carriers as the sorting equipment in the carrier facilities is not always equipped for heavier package weights.

Obviously these are not the only issues occurring with shipments around the country but hopefully these data points help you to mitigate some risk when shipping your valuable property.
